Professor Gorakski was perusing some police records from 1935 trying to locate good material for his next lecture. He always enjoyed reports written by Secretary Kneser, as they included plenty of details. He almost felt as if he were there. The case of Madame Enders was very complete.
"I'm tellin' yuh, The Hawk ain't been around here for three days," said Bettye Enders, owner of a disreputable boarding house.
"All right!" thundered Inspector Moss. "Let's take a look at his room."
"Can't. He had a special lock put on his door and I ain't got a key."
"Well, I'll get in!"
Bettye grumbled as she led the way to the second floor and watched Moss breaking in the door...swearing she'd make him pay for the damage. Entering the room he found the bed mussed and clothes thrown about in confusion.
"Make it snappy," growled Bettye glancing at a cheap alarm clock on the dresser beside an old kerosene lamp. "It's five-thirty. The old man comes home at six and he'll be wantin' his supper."
"Go get it," gruffly retorted Inspector Moss giving her a shove.
Vehemently protesting she left. Carefully and methodically he searched the room but found no clue as to where The Hawk might be hiding. As he lighted the kerosene lamp he was surprised to notice the clock read 6:30...he'd been at work an hour. Bellowing for Bettye he waited impatiently while she puffed her way up stairs accompanied by his assistant Gripman who had just arrived.
"Listen, old woman, you better come clean about The Hawk. Look at that basin of dirty water...his razor and brush...and all his other paraphenalia!" Moss was angry.
"I don't know nothin'. Nobody's been in here since he left!"
"No? Well, maybe we can loosen that tongue of yours at Headquarters! What about it? The Hawk was here yesterday and you know it!"
(police report continued on page 2)
Professor Gorakski chuckled while turning the page, knowing what he would read next.
HOW DID MOSS (AND PROFESSOR GORAKSKI) KNOW MADAME ENDERS WAS HOLDING OUT ON HIM?
A cheap alarm clock would probably need to be wound every 24 hours and the clock in the room was still keeping time.
