Retirement Activities in DenverSubmitted by Sally Kneser on July 21, 2010 - 7:20am
Retirement can be exciting, challenging, liberating, frightening, and much more. And it can alternate between exhaustion and boredom. How will you design your retirement? Over 1200 Denver residents took from one to six classes at the Academy for Lifelong Learning during the 2009-2010 "school" term. They did it without getting credits, without required homework, without guilt. Why? For the simple love of learning. Billing itself as “the athletic club for your mind,” the Academy offers daytime courses for adults in two 10-week terms each year -- all at low cost and without exams, grades or prerequisites. The volunteer instructors include former professors and teachers, plus individuals with a passion for a particular subject. Director Sally Kneser adds, “The Academy helps people make the most of their lives. People who stay engaged in stimulating mental exercise in a social setting have been proven to increase longevity and stay healthier.” Another participant, Heather Land, says she is particularly pleased to “have been able to share some of my knowledge and accumulated information and handouts with my grandchildren.” Join the Academy's mailing list to receive news about future classes.
